ALCINE 55, the film festival organised by the Department of Culture of Alcalá de Henares City Council and the Community of Madrid, gets underway this Thursday 5 November with a programme for all ages. That includes children, with activities taking place over the next two weekends: young audiences can watch the best children’s short films, discover how a phenakistoscope works and create their own animation, and attend the ALCINE Kids Children’s Gala and a musical performance by Érika López.

María Luquero and her team from the young animation and design studio Arriate invite families on a journey back to the days before cinema through the phenakistoscope, the first optical toy to create the illusion of a moving image. Children can create their own animation using this device from the dawn of cinema. Their creations will become part of the ALCINE Kids animated ident, which will premiere at the Children’s Gala on Saturday 14 November at Teatro Salón Cervantes.
The founders of Arriate, based in southern Spain, have worked on well-known franchises including Pocoyó, Tadeo Jones and Game of Thrones.
Who it’s for: Families with children aged 6–12
Sessions: Sunday 8 November, at 12.00 pm and 5.00 pm.
Venue: La Casita del O'Donnell (Parque O'Donnell, s/n, Alcalá de Henares)
Places per session: 15 children, plus accompanying adults
Free admission with advance registration.
The ALCINE Kids Children’s Gala will be a celebration created especially for young audiences, with children from Colectivo CAJE presenting the Children’s Audience Award, chosen by their own jury. The programme will feature some of the finalist shorts and the animated ident made from the creations produced at the ALCINE Kids Workshop. And, as at any party, there will be music: composer and pianist Érika López will bring songs featuring tango-dancing lice, kimono-clad cats with artistic ambitions and traditional ditties about Spanish omelettes.
Érika López has composed and performed music for artists and projects including Anni B Sweet, Alondra Bentley, Mikel Izal, La Banda de Late Motiv and El Lamentable Circo de Raúl Cimas y la Orquestina del Pirata. Alongside these collaborations, she has her own project, Érika y los López, which blends jazz and folk music. She also dedicates part of her work to young audiences: she is a member of the trio MUU! and has developed a range of performances, both solo and with other musicians. At the ALCINE Kids Gala, she will share a selection from her varied repertoire.
