Elio Perlman, a young boy of 17 years, passes the hot and lonesome summer of 1983 in the cottage of his parents in northern Italy. He spends his time lazing around, listening to music, reading books and swimming until one day the new American farm helper of his father arrives at gran villa. Oliver is charming and, like Elio, has Jewish roots. Also, he is young, self-assertive and attractive. In the beginning, Elio presents himself a bit cool and distant towards the young boy but soon they start to go on excursions together and as the summer advances, the mutual attraction of the couple grows more intense.
