The artwork created by illustrator Adara Sánchez for Nacho Vigalondo's latest film, Daniela forever, along with original pieces from the film, can be seen from today until November 25th in the exhibition ‘Adara Forever’, one of six exhibitions that make up the ALCINE 54 program and with which the Alcalá de Henares / Community of Madrid Film Festival opens.
ALCINE 54 completes its exhibition offerings with ‘Álex de la Iglesia: 35 Years Laughing in the Dark’, a retrospective of the Bilbao-born director's career; ‘ALCINE Archive: Iván Zulueta’, a small documentary exhibition of materials by the filmmaker and designer preserved in the festival's archives; and ‘Best Short Film Poster Award’, a selection of the ten ALCINE 54 posters and the versions created by students of the Alberto Corazón School of Art. the ‘II Videomapping Exhibition of the Alberto Corazón School of Art’, with projections also designed by its students, and ‘The other side of cinema’, with works by ten of the best cartoonists of today.
'Adara Forever' showcases the artwork created by Adara Sánchez for the film Daniela forever (Nacho Vigalondo, 2024), where her art became synonymous with that of the protagonist, Daniela Rampa, played by Beatrice Grano (The White Lotus). According to Vigalondo himself, "Adara ended up playing a role in Daniela Forever through her paintings," where "the silences, absences, and tremors in her work became a defining feature of the film's landscape."
The exhibition combines original pieces from the film with nearly life-size reproductions, displayed for the first time in the large format conceived for this contemporary classic of romantic science fiction. It is complemented by posters for feature films and short films created by the illustrator.
"In the film, the protagonist gives Daniela this exhibition as a gift, and I'm feeling that same emotion today," Adara Sánchez remarked this morning at the opening of the exhibitions in the Old Hospital of Santa María la Rica in Alcalá de Henares.
Also present at the event were the Councillor for Culture of Alcalá de Henares, Santiago Alonso; the artistic director of ALCINE, Pedro Toro; the director of the Alberto Corazón School of Art in Alcalá de Henares, Esteban Martínez, and Carlos Escobedo, a teacher at the center.acto han asistido también el concejal de Cultura de Alcalá de Henares, Santiago Alonso; el director artístico de ALCINE, Pedro Toro; el director de la Escuela de Arte Alberto Corazón de Alcalá de Henares, Esteban Martínez, y Carlos Escobedo, profesor del centro.
The 10 best posters from the films competing in the ALCINE 54 National and European Competitions, selected under the guidance of graphic designer Emilio Lorente, can be seen from today until Sunday, November 16, at the Old Hospital of Santa María la Rica.
From among them, students of the Advertising Graphics program at the Alberto Corazón School of Art in Alcalá de Henares will select the winner of the ALCINE 54 ‘Best Short Film Poster Award’. The exhibition also includes student versions of 20 of the posters from the National Competition.
“The poster is the gateway to the short film, a preview of what the film tells us, and it is very important for the Alberto Corazón School that our students can be involved in this type of process thanks to festivals like this,” said Carlos Escobedo, the project coordinator.
From Mirindas asesinas to his production company, Pokeepsie Films. From Call of Cthulhu games with friends to a gigantic live-action role-playing series with an international cast for HBO. The exhibition ‘Álex de la Iglesia: 35 Years Laughing in the Dark’, opening tomorrow at the Capilla el Oidor, reviews the career of filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia, undoubtedly one of the most unique, personal, and explosive in Spanish cinema.
The exhibition begins with his participation in the 20th Alcalá de Henares Film Festival in 1990, with his 16mm short film Mirindas asesinas, and traces his career through various materials from his films and original designs, the exhibition produced for Cómic BCN in 2023 about his connection to comics and role-playing games, and a look back at the decade since the founding of his production company, Pokeepsie Films, which has successfully combined Álex de la Iglesia's style with the production of new talent and reaching new audiences.
‘Álex de la Iglesia: 35 Years Laughing in the Dark’ can be visited from November 7 to 30 at the Capilla del Oidor in Alcalá de Henares.
This year, the festival dedicates its ALCINE Archive to the avant-garde designer and filmmaker Iván Zulueta, director of the cult film Arrebato, with the presentation of his book ‘La vanguardia frente al espejo’ (The Avant-Garde Facing the Mirror). The festival also presents the exhibition ‘Archivo ALCINE: Iván Zulueta’, a display of pieces and materials from the festival related to the San Sebastián-born director, including true treasures that will later be donated to the Spanish Film Archive for preservation.
As the closing event of this tribute to Zulueta at ALCINE 54, the festival will hold the event ‘Zulueta: Alcalá - NY. Una velada arrebatada’ on ??November 15th, which will include the Madrid premiere of El último Arrebato. The debut film by journalist and screenwriter Marta Medina and producer Enrique López Lavigne, with special collaboration from Jaime Chávarri, is a hybrid of reality and fiction, with a meta-cinematic true crime feel, that attempts to answer the ultimate mystery left by Zulueta.
‘Archivo ALCINE: Iván Zulueta’ will be on display from November 7 to 17 at the Antiguo Hospital de Santa María la Rica.
The exhibition ‘The Other Side of Cinema’, featuring caricatures of 10 of today’s most prominent cartoonists, can still be seen at the Fábrica del Humor (Humor Factory) until December 21. Organized by ALCINE and the Quevedo Institute of Humor Arts of the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá (UAH), the exhibition is a tribute to all those who have lent and continue to lend their faces to the seventh art, both in front of and behind the camera.puede verse en la Fábrica del Humor, hasta el 21 de diciembre, la exposición ‘La otra cara del cine’, con caricaturas de 10 de los humoristas gráficos más destacados de la actualidad.
