Prison Short: ALCINE's short films arrived at the Alcalá-Meco prisons

The inmate population of Madrid 1 and Madrid 2 attended the screening of five short films selected by the festival and the prison educators under educational and reintegration criteria, and participated in a discussion with some of the directors of the films.

ALCINE arrived this week at the Madrid 1 and Madrid 2 penitentiary centers with the fourth edition of its Corto Prisión project, which brought to the inmate population some of the best short films of the year, including two of the winners of ALCINE 53, the Festival of Cinema of Alcalá de Henares / Community of Madrid, which concluded on November 17. Five short films selected by the festival and by prison educators with educational and reintegration criteria.

“Activities like this are fresh air and the inmates appreciate it. The purpose of their stay here is treatment, and the more activities that can be carried out, the better, because the objective is for them to leave society better than when they entered," says José Comerón, director of the Madrid 2 penitentiary center.

Corto Prisión was born four years ago at the suggestion of the deputy director of Madrid 2 Treatment, José Andrés Tomás Jiménez, and ALCINE's response was “immediate,” he says. “The name was inspired by a Carabanchel project, Teleprisión. The shorts are selected with an educational criterion and that there is something in the theme that reaches them, that moves them," he adds.

“For ALCINE it is very important to be able to reach the largest possible population, also the prison population, with short films selected for this cycle: two of them are Goya winners, and two have triumphed in the ALCINE 53 awards, and it is quite nice that the inmates can also be part of the honors list,” says Pedro Toro, artistic director of ALCINE.

In this edition, the women inmates of Madrid 1, on Thursday, and the men of Madrid 2, on Friday, attended the screening of five short films, four of them fiction and one animation: 'Malegro verte' and 'La Fuerza ', two short films programmed exclusively for Corto Prisión; 'Although it is at night' and 'Cura sana', two of the winners of the ALCINE 53 awards, and 'To bird or not to bird', winner of the Best Animated Short Film Award at the latest Goya awards, in which 'Although es de noche' also won the Best Fiction Short Film.

After the screenings, the inmates of Madrid 1 and Madrid 2 participated in a discussion with some of the directors of the selected shorts. Among them, María José Martín Barcelona, ??co-director of 'La Fuerza', with Tristán Ulloa as the protagonist, "a story with a hopeful message that the events of our lives do not have to determine who we are," explains the producer and director.

In Thursday's session in Madrid 1, scheduled together with CEPA Clara Campoamor, the inmates were able to talk after the screening with the directors of 'Malegro verte', Nüll García, and 'Cura sana', Lucía G. Romero, and with Cristina Martín Barcelona, ??co-director of 'La Fuerza'.
