El cuento de una noche de verano, by María Herrera, on the National Shortfilm Competition, and O Jardim em movimento, by the Portuguese Inês Lima, in the European Competition are the winning films of the first diamonds of the 53rd edition of ALCINE, the Alcalá de Henares / Community of Madrid Film Festival, and have already assured their preselection for the Oscar Awards (and the Goya, in the case of the winner of the National Contest). The winners of ALCINE 53 were announced this morning at the Teatro Salón Cervantes, with the attendance of some of the winners, who will collect their awards at the Festival's Closing Gala this evening.
For the second time in the history of ALCINE, the three first prizes in the National Short Film Contest have gone to three women: María Herrera, with El cuento de una noche de verano, First Diamond of ALCINE 53; Maryam Harandi, with La palmera, Second Diamond; and Miriam Martín-Díaz Aldagalán, con Vuelta a Riaño, Third Diamante.
Also on the National Shortfilm Competition, Cura sana, by Lucía G. Romero, was the short film that won the Audience Award.
In the European Short Film Contest, the three diamonds of ALCINE 53 are, in this order, for O jardim em movimento, by Inês Lima; Few can see, by Frank Sweeney, and Un genre de testament, by Stephen Vuillemin; and the European Audience Award went to Berthe is dead but it’s ok, de Sacha Trilles.
Outside of the two competitions, but in the other competitive sections of ALCINE, La Estrella Azul, by Javier Macipe, has won the Open Screen Audience Award; and Wan, by Víctor Monigote, from the AL(U)CINE – FGUAH - CIMUART Award for Best Fantasy Short Film, the new competition section inaugurated in the 53rd edition of ALCINE.
In addition, the Children's Jury Prize of the Department of Family, Youth and Childhood has gone to Los carpinchos, by Alfredo Soderguit, and the Alberto Corazón Art School Trophy for Best Short Film Poster has gone to Magdalena Orellana, for her work in Solo the dead stay.
The artistic director of ALCINE, Pedro Toro, recalled during the presentation of the awards that “most of these films can be seen again during the weekend: first, tonight, after the gala, with a small selection, and during the weekend, with several awards passes, some very special.”
Thus, a new Session is added to the traditional screening of the winners at the Teatro Salón Cervantes (Saturday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.). Teta, ALBIBE, in which families with infants will be able to see the official record (for adult audiences) in a space adapted to their needs. It will be on Saturday, November 16 at 12:00 and 1:00 p.m., at Gilitos / Laboratorio de Creación Alcalá, which will have changing tables, an accessible space with a place to leave strollers and light and sound adapted for babies.
Also on Saturday, at 12:30 p.m., at the Teatro Salón Cervantes, ALCINE inaugurates in this edition another very different way to enjoy the awards: Vermouth Session, with tasting courtesy of Vermouth Forzudo after the screening.
Some spectacular figures
Without having come to an end, and with its last weekend still ahead, the 53rd edition of ALCINE already leaves some “figures that speak volumes and well about the good health of the festival”, according to the Councilor for Culture of Alcalá , Santiago Alonso, during the press conference. Compared to the two previous editions, which had similar attendance figures, the number of ALCINE spectators “has increased this year by 80%”, the councilor has advanced.
“In the absence of many sessions that are still missing this weekend, the figures for ALCINE 53 are spectacular: nearly 2,000 spectators enjoyed the National Short Film Contest; more than 600 attended the European; 1,200 at Screen Open and nearly 8,000 young people from schools throughout the region have gone through the different educational sections of the festival,” said Alonso.
