'Bichos raros', by Alegría Collantes and Estíbaliz Burgaleta, Best Script Award
You are both scriptwriters turned directors. Why did you decide to take up directing?
(Estíbaliz Burgaleta): We were studying at Film School, and after three years there we realised we had never found a director we got on with well enough for there to be a real sense of teamwork. Most just tell you to write their own stories and leave you out of the picture. This was the way to try and get our own work made. Otherwise scripts would just stay on paper and nobody would see them. On top of that there is all the experience gained and everything we have learned.

'Bichos raros' (oddballs). Are they born or are they made?
Both; everything is possible. The idea of the short film is that everybody at some time, to a greater or lesser extent, feels that way, even those that do not appear to be that way. Everyone has a small something that seems weird to everyone else.

So the award for best script is for professional scriptwriters. This could be double flattery?
It's even more satisfying because it's what we best understand. It is our first short film and we are aware we still have many shortcomings as directors.
