Alcine 37, internationalization and heterogeneity

The Alcalá de Henares/ Comunidad de Madrid Film Festival has been running without a break for the last 37 years. A process of constant development has led to Alcine’s new commitment to internationalization. The Festival will be held next from the 9th to the 17th of November 2007, and will include a new European Short Film Competition as one of its official sections.

The new section, which was present last year but non-competitive in nature, will be entered by participants from the countries of the European Union, and Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The goal of this addition to Alcine 37 is to make it a Reference in the sphere of European Cinema. Special emphasis will be placed on work presented by new directors.

The European Competition joins the existing National Competition. The possible formats of both are to be broadened to extend opportunities beyond the strictly cinematic. 16 and 35mm productions will coexist alongside others presented in Betacam SP. The official sections will be completed with the Open Screen for New Directors section for debut works premiered in recent months.

Parallel Sections

Alcine 37 will include a wide range of parallel activities, to perfectly complement the official sections. Worthy of a special mention is the ‘Contemporary Voices’ series including projections, a publication drawn up by the festival and an exhibition. The objective is to exhibit an overview of Spanish cinema in the XXI century.

The novelties also include 'Cutting Close to the Bone', a section in which short films work as witnesses to the world, 'Short cuts', full-length films made from shorts, 'The Short’s Island', films, music and parties from Ireland, and 'Film Jockey', the best internet films played by experts.

Kids are welcomed into the cinemas to enjoy the short films included in 'Toy Story', an international selection of short films involving toys, and the section entitled 'Not Intended for Grown-ups’.

The program is completed with sections on 'Commercials’, 'Shorts a la carte', 'Movies 4 Teens', 'No budget films' workshops and the musical section Sónica 07, all designed for a festival actively staving off stagnation and committing to constant development.
