The philosophy professor Lucas is at rock bottom emotionally, unable to find joy and meaning to his life. Abe has the feeling that everything he tried to do, either as a political activist and teacher, has not had the slightest importance. Shortly after arriving at the university in a small town where he will teach, Abe is related to two women: Rita Richards, a lonely teacher who seeks to rescue him from his unhappy marriage; and Jill Pollard, his best student, who eventually becomes his closest friend...
